Freight Volume Calculator

Calculate CBM and volumetric weight for your freight planning with Prestige Sourcing

Use the calculator below to estimate total carton volume in cubic metres (CBM) and volumetric weight in kilograms.

This is useful when planning air freight, sea freight, warehousing or shipment consolidation from China.

If multiple cartons are the same size, simply enter the dimensions once and increase the quantity on that line.

What is CBM?

CBM stands for cubic metre. It is used to measure the total volume of a shipment and is especially important for sea freight, warehousing and consolidation planning.

What is volumetric weight?

Volumetric weight is a calculated weight based on the space a shipment occupies rather than its actual weight. It is commonly used in air freight and courier pricing.

For example, a shoe box filled with one feather, will be charged based on the size of the shoe box, not the weight.

What is chargeable weight?

Chargeable weight is the weight used by freight companies such as ourselves to calculate the shipping cost for some specific freight lines.

It is determined by comparing the actual weight of the shipment with the volumetric (dimensional) weight, and using whichever is higher.

For example, if a shipment weighs 50 kg but its volumetric weight is calculated at 80 kg due to the space it occupies, the freight cost will be based on 80 kg chargeable weight.

This ensures pricing reflects both the physical weight and the space taken up during transport.
