What is CBM?
CBM stands for cubic metre. In other words, it measures the total volume of a shipment and is especially important for sea freight, warehousing and consolidation planning.
What is volumetric weight?
By contrast, volumetric weight reflects the space a shipment occupies rather than only its actual weight. Air-freight and courier providers commonly use it when calculating charges.
For example, a large lightweight carton can cost more than its actual weight suggests because it occupies more space.
What is chargeable weight?
Chargeable weight is the figure a freight provider uses to calculate shipping costs on services priced by actual or volumetric weight.
Therefore, the provider compares actual weight with volumetric weight and uses whichever figure is higher.
For example, if a shipment weighs 50 kg but its volumetric weight is calculated at 80 kg due to the space it occupies, the freight cost will be based on 80 kg chargeable weight.
As a result, pricing reflects both the physical weight and the space taken up during transport.
